Police step up patrols following criminal damage at Merstham cemetery

Police officers from Reigate and Banstead’s Safer Neighbourhood Team have increased patrols in Merstham to deter people from causing criminal damage.

The move comes after a large granite urn had been removed from a grave and thrown into a bush and other graveside ornaments were damaged.

It is not known exactly when the damage was caused at Merstham Cemetery, Church Hill, but officers are determined to stop criminal damage of this kind before it escalates.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Olly Smith said: “Surrey Police takes a tough stance on any form of criminal activity but this offence is particularly disgraceful.

“The victim visited his mother and father’s grave on Sunday, 25 October, and found it had been desecrated along with a number of other graves.

“I would appeal to anyone who has any information regarding criminal damage at the cemetery to come forward. I want to reassure local people that incidents of this nature are very rare in Surrey, but also ask them to remain vigilant of suspicious activity.”

If you have any information please contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 quoting reference RB/09/10371.
