If it’s working, don’t bin it, Freecycle it

freecycle-r-att If like us this Christmas you have discovered a whole pile of unwanted or unused items in the loft or in the back of a cupboard; or if you have received a present you really didn’t want but can’t bare to see them going into a landfill then there is an effective option through Reigate Freecycle®.

Freecycle groups, like Reigate’s match people who have things they want to get rid of with people who can use them. Their goal is to keep usable items out of landfills. Another benefit of using Freecycle is that it encourages us to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process. Unlike web sites like eBay or newspaper classified ads Freecycle is free.

How does Freecycle® work?

Everything posted must be free, legal and appropriate for all ages. When you want to OFFER something – whether it’s a chair, fax machine, piano or an old door, simply sign-up to the Reigate Freecycle® (its free) group via their web site and then post online the item you want to offer.

Maybe you’re looking to acquire something yourself? You can also post a WANTED message and a group member may just have what you’re looking for.

After that it is up to the giver to decide who receives the gift from the responses that only they receive and to set up a collection time, and finally post an item TAKEN message.

Cllr Brunt – “At home we had a TV that worked perfectly; we no longer had a need for it but couldn’t bare to see it go to see it go into landfill. Through various friends we discovered Freecycle and were able to pass on our TV to some who needed it.

We have now started looking at some of the items gathering dust in the loft to see if any of these can be Freecycled so that they can have a second life.”

Reigate area Freecycle®

The Reigate Freecycle® group is open to all in the Reigate & Banstead area who want to “recycle” items they no longer need, rather than throw them away. For more details log on to their web site at:

or use your local Freegle group…..just like freecycle(tm) but always run by a local member of your community. Don’t throw it away! Give it away!
