Merstham residents are invited to join Reigate and Banstead’s countryside rangers to hear in the Dawn Chorus on Redhill Common on Sunday 21st March. Ideal for early birds, an “introduction to the dawn chorus for beginners” gives people a chance to listen to the early morning birdsong and learn to identify which song belongs to which bird.
For those of you that make it, meet him at 6am outside Dunottar School and stroll across Redhill Common. All the common birds will be in full song and Richard will tell you which is which. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear, and be aware that the terrain is likely to be steep in places. In this instance we ask you not to bring any dogs, to ensure we see as many birds as possible.
Meet: Outside the Dunottar School (High Trees Road, RH2 7EL) Grid Reference: TQ 26932 49622
Time: 6am
Duration: 2 Hours
As part of an interesting programme of guided walks and talks put together by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s parks and countryside team to help residents enjoy the great outdoors this spring. The programme, which runs from March to May 2010, includes a bluebell walk in Banstead Woods, a nature walk and heritage walk around Earlswood Common and even a bat spotting evening in Priory Park. The Council’s Countryside Rangers will be leading the walks.
Cllr Julian Ellacott, Executive Member for Environment, said: “The first series of events last autumn proved so popular that we decided to organise more this year. They are a great way for people to get out and enjoy their natural environment and learn more about the nature and countryside on their doorstep. And who better to guide them than our Countryside Rangers who work on these sites almost every day. They are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the work they do to improve the borough’s countryside for everyone to enjoy.”
All the events are free of charge but booking is essential as places are limited. The full programme of events is attached – link to Guided walks programme March-May 2010: http://collateral.newsflashconnect.co.uk/RemoteStorage/Reigate-banstead/Releases/1038/Guided%20Walks%20Programme%20March%20to%20May%202010.doc
