Older%20woman%20chains%20door%20[iStock_5666779] Local police are appealing for witnesses following distraction burglary at an elderly lady’s house in Merstham

The incident happened at 4.40pm on, Saturday, 1 May, when the a man posing as a plumber told the 81-year-old victim he needed to check the taps and water supply to prevent her neighbour’s property from flooding.

The lady allowed him into her kitchen, in Nailsworth Crescent, where he spent approximately five-minutes testing the water flow whilst the victim assisted him by turning the taps on.

The victim heard her front door close noisily and the plumber made a hasty exit after saying ‘that’s my friend’.

The victim became suspicious and checked her property and found her bedroom had been ransacked and £100 stolen from her purse which was in the front room.

The suspect is described as a white man, approximately 5ft 2’ tall, of very slim build and short dark brown brushed back hair, he spoke with either a foreign accent or had a speech impediment, he wore a white or cream shirt and jeans.

Investigating Officer Detective Constable David Sprague said:
“Seeking out elderly people and preying on their trusting nature in order to steal from them is heartless and repugnant.

“A white ford transit van with blacked out windows was seen in the vicinity at the time of the incident and I am keen to trace the occupants of this vehicle as they may have vital information.

“The local Safer Neighbourhood Team works with vulnerable and elderly people to make them aware of the methods of distraction burglaries and what to do if a stranger calls but we need the help of residents and businesses alike to stop this offence.

Working together we can ensure all members of our community are safe.”

Anyone with information regarding this burglary, or if you recognise the suspect’s description, please contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 quoting reference RB/10/4030 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

This lady is unique, kind, honest, hearty, full off fun and laughter; but also straight 2 the point, in my eyes, she has been there done it, not being rude; ie a very clued up and intelectual woman
so …on top floor flat, why did they “randomly!!!choose her?????”
