Residents can now txt-check how long till the next bus

Running for the bus could be a thing of the past thanks to Surrey County Council’s new mobile phone text service. Bus users can now find out how long until the next three services are away by texting a unique bus stop code to 84268.

Within seconds they will receive a text message with real-time information on how long they have to wait. People can also ask for information on a specific service to find out how long it will take the buses on that route to arrive.

Texts cost 25p each on most mobile networks and the first 4,000 are free to encourage people to start using the service. The scheme will cover 3,800 stops in Surrey.

If someone is waiting for a bus not able to transmit real-time travel, they will receive scheduled timetable information. Each bus stop’s unique code can be found at

Ian Lake, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “We want to make it as convenient as possible for people to use Surrey’s buses and we’re pleased to be able to take advantage of technology to make life easier for passengers.

“You don’t have to be at a bus stop to use the service. As long as you know the unique code you can receive the information from anywhere, whether it be on the walk to the bus stop or even in bed if you’ve over slept.”
