A group of MPs have confirmed in a report today government plans to impose fortnightly rubbish collections on residents is not right for all areas and there is no proof they increase recycling.
The Commons local government committee confirmed what residents and Merstham councillors had long thought that switching to 2 weekly collection of food waste was not the answer to increasing recycling targets.
The report also said the some councils had "blundered into" introducing alternate weekly collections "without adequately informing local householders and council tax payers" and that "Whether a weekly or alternate system is best for a particular area is a matter of local circumstance and a matter for local choice"
On the issue of public health they reported that, "Research has found no public health risk, but wider research is required to convince the public."
Cllr Brunt "Merstham' S councillors remain committed to the collection of waste from residents homes on a weekly basis."
"We know residents want to recycle more and we will continue to work towards making this easier for them to do this but are not prepared to leave our residents with maggot infested bins in the process".
